What color should I paint my dining room?
I’m wanting to paint my dining room. Right now its a light tan color and I want to make it a little less dark in there. The room has dark wood floors and a big window. Also I don’t want it to be white. I was thinking maybe a yellow or light green. Any suggestions?

Found a couple of pictures that will help you visualize the ‘Yellow’ colour for your Dining Room…
This one shows THE HORROR of ‘Lemon Yellow’… The one most people pick who say, ‘I want a bright, sunny yellow colour’, *lol*. Then, after they paint the walls, are mortified at the result… and rightfully so.

This one shows the beauty of ‘Creamy Yellow’… please note the ‘Lemon Yellow’ Coffee Mugs on the table, which is also picked up by the Clock hanging on the back wall as well; (that is what I mean by ‘Splashes’ of a deeper, darker Yellow colour)…

It would be the same for your Green colour should you choose to go that way instead. PALE on the walls, DEEPER with the accessories.
p.s. Don’t be surprised if you have to go thru a few quarts of ‘try-out’ paint in order to get the perfect Shade. It’s well worth the money (even tho it feels like such a waste at the time). Coming home and having to face colours you hate is just not worth it. So, figure on spending upwards of even $40-50 bucks to get the right Shade.
Paint 12″ x 12″ swatches next to the Window in your Dining Room… paint another on the opposite wall… and paint yet another on the darkest wall in the room. Then watch the colour shift and change with the morning, afternoon, and evening light. See what it looks like with your incandescent lighting. Only then will you really know for sure what works and what doesn’t.
Good luck!

Both Green and Yellow are nice colours, but I would ask first, what are your Fabrics in there? Do you have Seat Cushions to take your colour cue from? Or Blinds or Draperies/Curtains? Or an Area Rug? Perhaps a favourite piece of Art Work hanging in there? Even a Vase or Pottery or you-get-the-idea. You should pull the paint-colour from any of these.
As well, what is the ‘Style’ of your Dining Room? What ‘look’ are you trying to achieve in there? This, too, is a consideration when painting walls. Yellow tends to be bright and cheerful, a more ‘Countrified’ look… whether French Country or Rustic. You can make it as sophisticated as you want or as toned-down from that as you want.
Green will give a more ‘Modern/Contemporary’ look and feeling. It’s a more soothing colour, true, but will not engender lively conversation at the table, *lol*, unless you’re using a very pale Mint Green, (which would also give a more ‘countrified’ ambience).
Once decided, if you go with Yellow, make sure it is a very, VERY pale CREAMY Yellow. Like the First colour on the top of the Paint-Strips you get at a paint store. Anything underneath that will look positively Crayon when you’re done painting it on your walls. As well, stay far away from Lemony Yellows. Even if you have Lemony Yellow Fabrics or Curios, go with the palest Creamy Yellow for your walls and use the deeper Yellows you have as splashes of colour throughout the room.
If you go Green, you have to ask what shade of Green. Again, whatever you choose, (Sage Green, Mint Green, Teal Green, etc), make sure it’s the palest one on the Paint-Strip, (the First colour choice on the Paint-Strip). Again, stay away from the ‘Apple Green’ colours. They fall into the same category as the ‘Lemon Yellows’, yuk. Apple Green, (just like Lemon Yellow), is alright for splashes of colour, but NOT for walls.
Take your Fabric with you, (or a Curio or whatever), to match-up the Shade when you go to the store. When you’ve matched-up the actual Paint-Strip colour to this, (which may very well be down in the middle or bottom of the Paint-Strip), go all the way back to the top of the Strip and choose that first, palest colour to paint your walls with… that is the Tone (the lightness or darkness) within the same Shade family. See?
