ssm The total current delivered to a number of devices connected in parallel is the sum of the individual currents in each device. Circuit breakers are resettable automatic switches that protect against a dangerously large total current by “opening” to stop the current at a specified safe value. A 1600 W toaster, a 1080 W iron, and a 1000 W microwave oven are turned on in a kitchen. As the drawing shows, they are all connected through a 20 A circuit breaker to an ac voltage of 120 V.
a) Find the equivalent resistance of the three devices.
(b) Obtain the total current delivered by the source.
Current = Power ÷ Voltage. Total power that the 20a circuit breaker can handle is 120 x 20 = 2400 watts. So, the total wattage of the loads exceeds the circuit breaker rating. 1600+1080+1000 = 3680 watts.
Power = Current x Voltage. In a parallel circuit, the total power is the sum of the individual power loads. Current = Power/Voltage = 3680/120 = 30.6 amps. Presuming that the microwave is not an inductive load.
V²/P= Resistance
Individuall resistances are: 1600 watt toaster is 9Ω, 1080 watt iron is 13.33Ω, 1000 watt microwave is 14.4Ω
Total parallel resistance is 3.91Ω
