Zojirushi Breadmakers
Are automatic bread machines heaven-sent or just another dust-catcher?

This month’s Reader’s Digest recommends making home made bread as a HEALTHFUL and ECONOMICAL alternative to store bought bread, but I’m guessing there’s two schools of thought there. I can see where it would be good to control what goes into your bread, but if it really tastes and smells very good then it might be an opportunity to gain weight instead of eat healthier, right?

Also, most of the breadmakers with favorable reviews are upwards of $150 to $240 dollars, (not $25 as Reader’s Digest reports) so it would take alot of loaves to get any economic return on that venture.

I have read enough reviews to know that Black & Decker has become a dud brand, and Zojirushi and Panasonic are the cream of the crop (apparently). I just wanted some honest input from our friends in the Y/A community who may have used bread machines.

Are they worth it? Do the benefits outweigh the cost? Or is it just another gadget to sit on the counter and gather dust?

It depends a lot on the individual. If you are a gadget lover, it will be indispensible. Some folks hate them, knwoing they can do it all in a stand mixer and baking in the oven. Some swear by their bread machines. Some get them and use them once and, as you say, let them become “dust catchers.”

I love mine, and use it regularly, but I can’t have bread finish baking when my wife gets home from work, or we will eat the whole loaf. So there is planning around the 3 or 4 hours it takes in the first place, and then there is planning to have bread ready when you need it, and finally there is planning to “protect” the bread from those who cannot control themselves :-)

You can try out bread machines to see if you want to invest in the top-of-the-line Zojirushi machines, just get one at a thrift store. Often they were someone else’s dust-catchers, so you can get a nearly new machine for very cheap. If you end up liking it, you can upgrade, if you hate it, you didn’t waste too much money finding out.
